I am both a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Carolina Panthers fan; we are a very niche community. And neither of those am I a bandwagon fan. Growing up in and living in North Carolina for all my life, it makes sense that I am a lifelong Carolina Panther fan. I have very fond memories of watching Steve Smith win the Triple Crown in 2005, along with other players like Julius Peppers, Jake Delhomme, Stephen Davis, and Chris Gamble. I was there to watch guys like Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Greg Olsen, and Thomas Davis. And yes, I was there to watch Jimmy Clausen, Matt Moore, and Vinny Testaverde.
Well, how did I become a Chicago Cubs fan as well living in North Carolina? There is definitely a population of Chicago Cubs fans in their late 20’s living in the Southeast, and that is because of the channel WGN. My family had the cable provider Time Warner Cable (now known as Spectrum), and included in that package was WGN which, at the time (now broadcasted by Marquee Sports Network), broadcasted Cubs games. My family was a baseball family, so baseball was always on the TV. And Cubs games were usually what were available to us. Derrick Lee (2005 year!!!!), Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano, and Alfonso Soriano are some of my childhood favorites. I remember very fondly the 2016 World Series, staying up until 2:00 AM the night before I had an AP Statistics exam in high school to watch the entirety of Game 7. I have been a very fortunate Chicago Cubs fan compared to most in the team’s history, but the gravity of that moment was indescribable.
Part of the reason I love sports is the story-telling aspect and the communities that are brought together for sport. Sports are a place where people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and occupations come together for one common goal, to root for the home team! I believe that sports are intended to be an inclusive environment regardless of someone’s race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc., and my intention is that these blog posts reflect that, even though I acknowledge that sports may not feel inclusive for everyone to this day.
A little bit more about me, other than sports I enjoy lifting weights, going on hikes, and playing disc golf and pickleball. I have a wonderful wife and am also a cat father to a psycho named Billy. I am also an avid fantasy baseball and football player. I also work in the mental health profession with experience as a licensed counselor and in other mental health roles. All of these opinions on this site are mine and I am sure a lot of these sports opinions will not age well. Time for some Sportsball Talk!
